埃尔维拉·克兰西是一位24岁的讣告作家，她热爱自己的工作，却感到生活缺乏意义。当她任职的报纸陷入危机时，她被迫改为按件计酬……一次意外让她杀死了一个令人厌恶的人，她发现自己竟然有杀人的快感。她开始用各种巧妙的手段消灭镇上的恶人，同时伪装成意外事件。然而，她的计划遇到了麻烦——报纸雇佣了一个爱钻研阴谋论的新犯罪记者，而她对他一见钟情。
